Black Wattle Shiraz 2005 (Coonawarra/Padthaway)

Tonight I really felt like this wine, having had a few bottles now I knew what to expect. To my surprise though, this wine was even better than I had remembered.
Smoky Rasberry is the main gist of this, it might sound a little simplistic, but this is an awesome wine. Solid and very memorable.
As I have said before, this won the Cellarmasters Wine of the Year and that is no small accomplishment really as Cellarmasters is one of the biggest retailers in Australia...
I wont go on, my other reviews tell the story, but I wish I had bought more of these when the chance was there.

Black Wattle Shiraz 2005 (Coonawarra/Padthaway)

Got home tonight and felt like something a little special, but not on the expensive side.
So I immediately thought of the Black Wattle Shiraz.
I still have about 8 bottles left and I felt like this. Very earthy, but with definite berry character. It's rich and smoky, but not overpowering. Long finish and quite nice tannins. Overall, this is a nice wine.
Wine of the Year for Cellarmasters, meh... i don't know how they pick them, but it's good and that's all that counts. Certainly not as good as the Dorrien Growers, but deinitely as good as anything else they have... except maybe the Vaserelli Shiraz.
Anyway, a nice drop.

Black Wattle Shiraz 2005 (Coonawarra/Padthaway)

Opened the second bottle of this Coonawarra Shiraz and it did not disappoint. Didn't really let it breathe too long, but long enough for it to open up and show enough to really please.

On the nose was a little vanilla and a hint of rasberry, not unpleasant or over powering at all. On the palate is strong berry fruits (rasberry sticks out) with a hint of pepper at the finish. Again, not over powering in any way and well balanced. Quite a nice little wine.

I tried the Black Wattle Icon 'Robe' Shiraz at the last tasting and it was brilliant. This particular wine was Cellarmasters 'wine of the year' and it was made by Neil Doddridge.

Need I say more...

Black Wattle Shiraz 2005 (Coonawarra/Padthaway)

Away from the cleanskins for a moment and onto a fairly decent drop from CellarMasters the wine club... This apparently won their 'Wine of the Year 07'

I didn't vote for it originally, but wasn't against it at all.

I got the case because I took part in the Wine of the Year pack thingy. Ended up being about $13 a bottle, so I couldn't refuse.

Ok, so have decided to crack one today and it took about an hour and a half in the bottle to show itself properly, but now it has I must say it's quite nice. A nice Chocolate tone with a hint of pepper. Quite Spicy too. (ok, I just read the proper tasting notes and they say 'lifted spices and integrated oak' - hope that makes more sense for you)

It feels a very smooth and medium to heavy bodied Shiraz. Made by my hero Neil Dodderidge too. :)
